THE ISLANDS

Mahé : The largest of the islands, it is home to the capital, Victoria, the international airport, the fishing and commercial ports, most of the population and most of the hotels including two casinos. Its powdery white, idyllic beaches, lush vegetation, plantations of coconut palms and cinnamon rise to forested peaks with unequalled views of the neighboring islands. Surrounded by coral reefs the clear, calm waters invite relaxation and offer many water sports. Although it is the nation's economic hub, it has retained all of its natural beauty and charm. Morne Sechellois National park can be visited and the summit ascended to view one of the most spectacular vistas in the world. Walking is the best way to get the feel of the island.

Praslin : This second largest island is 3 hours by boat or 15 minutes by air from Mahé. In its limited area, the richness and variety of plant and animal life is astounding. Most of the interior is virgin forest and the beautiful Vallée de Mai, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, is the only place where the coco-de-mer palm is found in the world. Its nut, the curious female pelvis-shaped fruit, makes the thought provoking palm the star attraction. The coastline is graced by the "best beach in the world", Anse Lazio and 900 fish species living in a rainbow spectrum of coral. The beaches are so secluded that you may find you and your partner are the sole occupants. Hotel, Lodge and private bungalow accommodation is comfortable, catering to a quieter, privacy-seeking clientele. It's also an excellent jumping off point to visit other islands.

La Digue : This stunning little island is probably the most photographed island in the world. It's 3 hours 15 minutes by schooner from Mahé and 30 minutes from Praslin, and is the breeding ground of the rare Black Paradise Flycatcher. Retaining quaint traditional ways and customs, the lifestyle is a flash back into the past with transportation by ox-cart or bicycle. Although it does not have a natural harbor, the reefs and massive granite rock boulders form a protective circle around the densely palmed shoreline. The almost blinding white beaches are excellent for safe swimming, snorkeling and fishing. Ideal for walking, the island can be comfortably circumnavigated at a leisurely pace. This 4th largest island retains all of the charm and tranquility visitors travel halfway around the world to enjoy.

Ste. Anne National Park's Islands : Ste. Anne, Long, Beacon, Round, Cerf and Moyenne Islands make up the Ste. Anne Marine National Park which is situated just off Victoria harbor. Ste. Anne has the distinction of being the site of the first French settlement in 1770, a courageous undertaking as the island then was surrounded by both mangroves and crocodiles. These islands y are popular for picnics. Visitors prefer trips in glass-bottomed boats or semi-subs. Excursions to the three islands comprise snorkeling, feeding the fish and lunch.

Silhouette : The second highest island, is famous for its mist forest. It is reputed to have the least disturbed original forest. It is the third largest granitic island and home to 200 people only. Silhouette, with its mountain top always shrouded in clouds, can be seen from Beau Vallon beach. There is one hotel there.

Fregate Island : Fregate Island is the granitic island furthest away from Mahé. It is accessible by plane, helicopter or boat. A five star resort was opened there in 1999. It has spectacular beaches and Anse Victorin in the northwest was voted by London's Sunday Times as the world's best beach. Fregate is said to have been a haven for pirates.

Bird Island : This coralline island is situated 90 kilometers from Mahé. It can be reached from Mahé by air in under one hour. The island's official name is "Ile aux Vaches" but derive its more common name from the millions of birds which flock to its shores during the months of May to September. The sooty terns and other species of birds arrive in their millions to breed and nest on this flat and sandy island. The Bird island Lodge is the only accommodation there.

Denis Island : Denis Island is reputed as a paradise for game fishing. It holds world records for several species of fish. Visitors can catch barracudas, bonitos and sailfish all year round but the best months for catching marlins are May and from October to December. Denis Island Lodge is the only accommodation there.

Desroches : Desroches is in the Amirantes group and is one hour's flight from Mahé. It is famous for scuba diving and other watersports. The more adventurous can explore the canyons and tunnels down the depths of the sea under the expert guidance of scuba diving instructors. There is only one hotel on Desroches.

Aldabra Atoll: The most remote of all Seychelles' islands, Aldabra is in fact closer to Madagascar. It is the workplace of scientists and biologists. There are no hotels but day trips for only a few visitors essentially nature enthusiasts, can be organized. Aldabra is the world's largest coralline atoll and is home to the only ecosystem in the world which is dominated by a reptile, the giant land tortoise. Its lagoon is large enough to be called a sea. Aldabra has the world's largest concentration of the giant land tortoises whose population at the last count numbered some 150,000. The atoll has many indigenous birds such as species of herons and ibis. The lagoon is equally populated with a multitude of fish, barracudas and sharks. Aldabra was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982.
