KIGALI - BUTARE - NYUNGWE FOREST - KIBUYE 
KINIGI (VPN) - KIGALI
9 Days

Day 1: Kigali
Welcome to Rwanda where you will be met on arrival by our representative and taken to your hotel in Kigali for overnight.
  • Overnight at, Option 1:  Chez Land or 
  • Option 2:Hotel des Milles Colline/ Lake Kivu Serena  on bed and breakfast basis.
NOTE: Depending on your arrival time your driver-guide may offer you a visit of Kigali city which includes the Genocide Memorial center at Gisozi.

Day 2: Kigali - Nyungwe Forest NP.
After breakfast you will depart for Huye (Butare) the second largest city of Rwanda .On your way to Huye, you will visit Nyanza (currently Nyabisindu) the former Mwami's palace (King's palace) and the seat of the feudal monarchy as well as the National Museum, which is one the finest ethnographic museum of East Africa. Afterwards, enjoy a  performance of the Urugangazi group of Intore-dancers. Lunch follows and afterwards, drive to Nyungwe Forest NP. Your driver-guide will stop at the  Park offices to have the last update on the presence of the semi-habituated groups of chimps and colobus monkeys. This will help you to prepare your activities of the next two days.

Day 3: Nyungwe Forest NP
A paradise for hikers, Nyungwe Forest is composed of rugged and steep terrain, and you will be at relatively high elevation. 
Start the day with an early breakfast and a briefing at Uwinka tourist information center. Depending on your personal interests you will have the choice to explore the largest high altitude rainforest of East Africa, the large social groups of Angolan Colobus monkeys, which may be over 300 individuals, meander along the  different beautiful trails available out of which the superb waterfall trail of Gisakura is probably the most rewarding.

Day 4: Nyungwe Forest NP
To see the semi-habituated chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest requires a very early morning (around 5:00 am). While well worth the effort,  you may opt for another guided primate walk or one of the hikes on the well-maintained trails.

  • Option 2: Nyungwe Forest Lodge on full board basis.
Day 5: Nyungwe Forest NP - Kibuye
After breakfast you will leave for Kibuye, passing through the green fields of tea plantations before exploring the shores of Lake Kivu. Kibuye which is one of the three towns on Lake Kivu is the most beautiful. Lunch is served on arrival at the lodge. The afternoon is about relaxation and wondrous moments on the shores of Lake Kivu. The more energetic can also take a walk around this magnificent area. 
Overnight at Cormoran Lodge on full board basis.

Day 6: Kibuye -  Kinigi
After breakfast, enjoy  a speed-boat trip to Gisenyi. The trip allows you to meet local people; fishermen but also with the residents of Idjwi Island (Congo) who are rowing long distances in their dugout canoes to visit the Rwandan markets.
You will be picked up in Gisenyi for lunch and if time/safety allows you will cross the border to the town of Goma, which was devastated by the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano. Afterwards, drive to Ruhengeri and Kinigi for overnight.

Day 7: Gorilla Trek
After breakfast you will report to the park headquarters where your driver-guide will accomplish the necessary formalities for you. You will meet your ranger guide(s) for a briefing about the gorilla trek. Return afterwards for  lunch at your hotel or at Ruhengeri. Time permitting, an excursion to explore the beautiful lakes in the region, caps the day.

  • Option 2: Virunga Lodge on full board basis.

Day 8: Second gorilla trek or other activity with transfer to Kigali
For those who opt for a second gorilla trek we suggest  that you visit one of the groups with a longer hiking time; the Susa group which is located on the slopes of the Karisimbi volcano and has more than 35 members and will give you a great sense of achievement.  
Alternatively, you may prefer: 
- A hike to the top of the Bisoke volcano (3.711 m) and its beautiful crater lake.
-  An excursion to the grave of Dian Fossey and the former Karisoke Research Center. 
- A walk to visit the Golden Monkeys. Listed as “endangered”, the newly habituated groups of about 40 individuals are the only ones to be found in Africa. 
 After the trekking or your chosen option, visit of the Iby'Iwacu traditional village, where the local community displays the traditional ways of living. Afterwards, drive back to Kigali, enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way.

  • Option 2: Hotel des Milles Colline/ Lake Kivu Serena  on bed and breakfast basis.

Day 9 : Kigali visit and departure
Depending on your flight time out, enjoy a half day visiting  Kigali which includes the Genocide Memorial Center at Gisozi., After lunch, you are transferred to the airport for your flight out.
